About Referent

Referent is practice management software built for law firms, aimed at solo lawyers, boutique firms and larger practices that want their operations handled by AI. Legal AI agents take on intake, matter filing, email, deadlines, drafting and billing preparation, while the lawyer reviews and approves every critical step.

The product is designed as a system of action rather than a record-keeping tool. Instead of typing every entry by hand, a lawyer can describe what needs to happen in chat or by voice, and agents carry it out. Emails and attachments are filed to the right matter automatically, deadlines are tracked, and invoices are assembled from work logged in the background, whether hourly or flat fee.

Referent positions its approval controls and data handling as central to the offer. Every action is logged and auditable, workspaces are encrypted and isolated per firm, and the company states it does not train AI models on firm data. The product also offers an MCP server so firms can work with their matters from ChatGPT, Claude and other compatible assistants.
