Panopt is a Chrome extension that writes alt text for images on any web page. It is aimed at site owners, content editors, marketers and accessibility-minded writers who want descriptive alt text without leaving the page they are working on.

To use it, right-click an image and choose Generate Alt Text. The extension handles standard image tags as well as CSS background images, and works on sites such as Pinterest and WordPress. The result appears on the page, ready to review and copy. Users can pick a tone, including editorial, conversational, technical or marketing, so the description fits its context. Panopt also reads the language of the page and returns alt text in that language, such as French, Japanese or Chinese.

Pricing is credit based: one credit per image, credits do not expire and there is no subscription. New users get 25 free credits on signup, with paid packs of 50, 200 and 500 credits available.
