About Caret

Caret is a free, open-source design tool for developers who want their design to live alongside their code. Pages are stored as real React files in a .caret/ folder inside your repository, so they can be reviewed in pull requests and tracked in git instead of drifting out of sync with a separate design file.

You edit pages on a live canvas by clicking text, colours and images, and Caret writes those changes back into the page's source file. Colours are matched to your design tokens where possible, so a brand colour change flows everywhere it was used. Harder changes can be marked on the page and described to an AI agent, and several design variants can be generated side by side.

Your app's own source is left untouched until you choose to sync the design layer into it, and the app can be built in any framework. Caret runs locally with no account, and you can use a model subscription you already have or an API key.
