Active Matrix Rooms

About Active Matrix Rooms

Active Matrix Rooms is a search directory for people who want to find public rooms on the Matrix network that are actually busy. Instead of sorting by member count, it ranks rooms by how many messages they receive, so newcomers can quickly see where conversation is happening right now.

The site crawls public room directories across the Matrix federation every five minutes and discovers new servers from room metadata. Each room card shows its alias, a short description, recent message volume over 12 hours and the number of accounts. Visitors can search by keyword, browse by topic such as programming, Linux, privacy or gaming, and copy a room address in one click. Rooms or whole servers the crawler has missed can be added by alias, room ID, server domain or matrix.to link, singly or in batches of up to 100.

The project states that it only counts messages and never reads or stores their content. It is open source, run by Masland Tech LLC and supported through donations.
